Crystal M. Flemming, PhD is a sociologist, author, Associate Professor of Sociology and Africana Studies at Stony Brook University. An alumna of Wellesley College, she completed her masters and doctoral work at Harvard University. There she served as president of the Graduate Student Council for PhD students and initiated Harvard's first-ever Day of Service. Identifying as a Black, bisexual woman, she is an outspoken and active advocate for people of color, and the LGBTQIA* community and speaks about racial justice, gender, sexuality, and activism. She successfully protested the publishing of the “Harriet Tubman Sextape" which trivialized the rape, enslavement, and torture of black women and girls. Russell Simmons pulled the tape and apologized. Dr. Fleming is the author of the critically-acclaimed How to Be Less Stupid About Race: On Racism, White Supremacy and the Racial Divide, a contributor for the Huffington Post, and has been published in The Sociology of Race and Ethnicity, and other scholarly journals.
